If you were learning to pole vault, you'd set the bar at a place where you could be successful and move it up from there. You'd figure out your form and get better as you practiced more.

So it is with reading. As a parent, make sure you are offering books for your child to read that he can read successfully. Too hard too fast will not help him be a better reader. He needs to learn the strategies along the way that will enable him to do that.

How do you know what that just right book is for your child? If she can read a page or two with no more than three errors per page, the book is a good one for her. Better to err on the too easy side than the too hard side. Practice, even at the easy level, will ensure your child is becoming a better reader!
